Nigerian singer and songwriter, Tiwa Savage, is set to make her directorial and lead role debut in the soon-to-be-released movie, “Water and Garri.” The film draws inspiration from Savage’s EP Water and Garri, and is set to be released later this year.

Water and Garri tell the story of Aisha (Tiwa Savage), a fashion designer based in the U.S. who returns to her home in Africa after losing a family member. The movie documents how she tries to reconnect with old friends, family, and an ex-lover as she lives with her scars and is faced with the guilt of what she left behind.

While sharing the news on her Instagram page, she said, “This is about to be an iconic moment. My first calling and co-directing debut with the GOAT Meji Alabi.” While this serves as Tiwa’s lead role debut, the singer was a supporting actress in the third season of the popular television drama series, Shuga, where she played the role of Sade, an overprotective mother of a son who is HIV positive.

On making her lead role debut, Tiwa stated, “This project was a complete labor of love that has been a dream of mine for a number of years. Performing as Aisha allowed me to be totally vulnerable and pushed me to express myself in a way that I’ve never done before. It was an honor to share my debut as an actress in a leading role with Meji whilst filming on the African continent with a cast and crew that I have immense admiration and respect for. I’m excited for the world to see this film.” Other cast members include Jemima Osunde, Mike Afolarin, and Andrew Bunting.

The film was directed by ace filmmaker, Meji Alabi, while Comfort Emmanuel wrote it. Here, Tiwa doubles as the lead actor, co-director, and executive producer, and she also takes credit as the writer and performer of the movie’s original soundtrack.

The movie filmed in Ghana is a joint production between Unbound Studios and JM Films.
