The Nigeria Prize for Literature has unveiled the shortlisted writers for its 2023 edition. After reviewing the works of the 11 longlisted writers, the literary prize panel of judges stated that the shortlisted works, “Stand tall in terms of dermatology, language, performance, story, and structure.”
The shortlisted works are:
Grit by Obari Gomba
The Ojuelegba Crossroads by Abideen Abolaji Ojomu
Yamtarawala The Warrior King by Henry Akubuiro
The winner will be announced at the award ceremony on October 13, 2023.

The chairman of the advisory board for the prize, Prof Akachi Adimora-Ezeigbo, while making the announcement, said, “Our dedicated judges and the advisory board over the years have consistently worked together to seamlessly blend the contemporary heartbeat with the essence of Nigerian literature. The shortlist serves as a testament to its harmonious fusion and the enduring legacy of our nation’s literary landscape.”
The Nigeria Prize for Literature was inaugurated in 2004 alongside the Nigeria Prize for Science. The prize was initiated to improve the quality of writing, editing, proofreading, and publishing in Nigeria. Since its inception, the literary prize has honoured published books by Nigerian writers in the different genres under review. These genres include Prose, Poetry, Drama, and Children’s Fiction. The genre under review this year is Drama. The winner of this year’s prize will receive $100,000.
