Burna Boy, Fireboy DML, Asake, Black Sheriff Win at the 2023 Soundcity MVP Awards

Burna Boy and Fireboy DML won the Best African Act and Best Pop Song respectively at the award show.

African music acts, Oxlade, Burna Boy, Akon, Pheelz, Magicsticks, Costa Titch, Kizz Daniel, Tems, and many others won awards in the 15 music categories at the 2023 Soundcity MVP Awards.

Nigerian act, Burna Boy, took home the award for Best African Act, while Asake clinched the award for Best Nigerian Act. While South Africa’s DJ Maphorisa won the award for Best DJ, Fireboy DML won the Best Pop category. Likewise, Ghana’s Black Sheriff took home the Best Hip Hop for his song, “Kwaku the Traveller,” and Nigerian video director, TG Omori, won an award for Video of the Year.

The fifth edition of the show, which aims to recognise outstanding achievements in the African music industry, brought together a bunch of talented African acts like Lojay, Mohbad, Zuchu, Ruger, Phina, Young Jonn, Gyakie, Ayra Starr, DJ Maphorisa, and many other acts who gave riveting performances. The event was held in Lagos at the Eko Convention Centre, and was hosted by South African actress, Pearl Thusi.

Aside from the fantastic performances, fashion statements, and inspiring speeches from the winners, a tribute was also dedicated to individuals such as Rico Swavey, Sound Sultan, AKA and others who have impacted the African music industry.

After a brief hiatus caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the organisers of the coveted music award show had announced its return by releasing a press statement which was closely followed by the nominations list.
