The organisers of the Evaristo Prize for African Poetry, formerly known as the Brunel International African Poetry Prize (BIAPP), have announced the shortlist for its 2024 edition.
The shortlisted authors and their poetry collections include Nigerian authors Derek Ehiorobo’s And God Said, Kyle Okeke’s Butterflies, Wale Ayinla’s How to Live in Denial, Chisaraokwu’s This Wake Holding, and South African writer, Nkateko Masinga’s Self-Portrait in Utopia and Other Poems. Established first as the Brunel International African Poetry Prize (BIAPP) in 2012 by British writer Bernadine Evaristo, the prize was renamed the Evaristo Prize for African Poetry in 2022. The literary prize seeks to, “encourage a new generation of poets who might one day become an international presence.” Some of the prize’s previous winners have gone on to win other literary prizes and get their winning chapbooks published. The year’s winner will be announced in May 2024.
