While this year’s event host is yet to be announced, the award show will be held on September 12, 2023, in New Jersey.

African artistes, Davido, Ayra Starr, Burna Boy, Rema, Libianca, Burna Boy, and Fireboy, have been announced as nominees for the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards. For the first time, the VMAs have introduced the Afrobeats category where Burna Boy’s “It’s Plenty,” Davido’s “Unavailable” featuring Musa Keyz, Wizkid’s “2 Sugar” featuring Ayra Starr, Rema’s “Calm Down” featuring Selena Gomez, Ayra Starr’s “Rush,” Libianca’s “People,” and Fireboy’s “Bandana” featuring Asake, are vying for the Best Afrobeats Song award. 

In addition, Rema is nominated for the Collaboration of the Year and Song of the Year category for “Calm Down.” 

Other nominated artistes include Taylor Swift, Beyonce, Alicia Keys, Olivia Rodrigo, Sam Smith, Doja Cat, GloRilla, Nicki Minaj, Shakira, and Ice Spice.

Now in its 39th year, the MTV Video Music Awards, popularly abbreviated as the VMAs, is an award show presented by the American cable channel, MTV, to honour the best music videos. Popularly called the Grammy Awards for music videos, the award show has continued to recognise quality music videos and artistes. While this year’s event host is yet to be announced, the award show will be held on September 12, 2023, in New Jersey.
