African artistes, Tyla, Burna Boy, Tems, Ayra Starr, Makhadzi, Focalistic, Davido, Lojay, Asake, Tyler ICU, and Seyi Vibes, have been announced as some of the artistes nominated for the 2024 edition of the BET Awards.
Tyla leads the pack with four nominations in the Best New Artist, Best International Act, Viewers’ Choice Award, and Best Female R&B/Pop Artist categories. Ayra Starr follows behind with three nominations in the Best New Artist and Best International Act categories. She also clinched her third nomination in the BET Her category for her song “Comma”.
Nigerian acts, Burna Boy and Tems, were nominated in two categories. The former was nominated in the Best RnB/Pop Act and Best Hip Hop Act, while the latter earned nominations for Best Video Director and the Dr. Bobby Jones Best Gospel/Inspirational Award for the record, “Me & U”.
Asake and South African artiste, Focalistic, earned a nomination for Best International Act, while Seyi Vibez was nominated alongside South African artistes, Tyler ICU, and Makhadzi in the Viewers Choice: Best International New Act category. For their contributions to Chris Brown’s “Sensational”, Davido and Lojay clinched a joint nomination in the Viewers’ Choice Award category.
Also noteworthy of mention are British-African and African-American actors like Damson Idris, Idris Alba, and Ayo Adebiri, who were nominated in the Best Actor and Best Actress categories, respectively.
Other nominated artistes include Nicki Minaj, Beyonce, Muni Long, SZA, Jack Harlow, and many others. This year’s award show will air live from Los Angeles on BET on Sunday, June 30, at 8 p.m. ET/PT. This year’s theme is “Standing on Culture”.
The BET Awards is an American award show established in 2001 by the Black Entertainment Television, to celebrate black entertainers and other minorities in music, film, sports, and philanthropy. The awards, which are presented annually, are broadcast live on BET. The annual presentation ceremony also features different artists’ performances and memorable red carpet-moments.
