Nigerian fast-rising Afrobeats songwriter and singer, Tems, has clinched yet another accolade in her music career, receiving the “Songwriter of the Year” award at the 2023 BMI R&B/Hip-Hop Awards.
She shares the recognition with big-league artistes such as Chris Brown and Doja Cat, affirming her lyrical prowess in the music industry.
This remarkable feat comes shortly after receiving the 2023 Trailblazer Award at the 2023 ELLE Style Award.
“Sending a huge congrats to @Temsbaby on winning ‘Songwriter of the Year’ at this year’s #BMIRnBHHAwards! From ‘Free Mind’ and ‘Lift Me Up’ to ‘Wait For U,’ Tems, you did not let up! This is your fourth BMI Award! But who’s counting?” shared the organisers via a post on X, praising the artiste for a blazing career.

Tems’ songs were recognised as some of the best-written songs of the year, alongside Chris Brown’s “Baddest”, “Come Through”, and “Under the Influence”; and Doja Cat’s tracks “Get Into It (Yuh)”, “Vegas”, and “Woman.”
Despite not having released a studio album since the outset of her musical career, the RCA Records signee has amassed multiple awards including a Grammy.

In the same spotlight, five-time Grammy award-winning rapper, Lil Wayne, was presented with the BMI Icon Award in recognition of his illustrious career spanning over 20 years and his influence on the genre. While American rapper/songwriter, Ice Spice received the BMI Impact Award.

The star-studded exclusive event which was held on Wednesday, September 6th at LIV Nightclub, Fontainebleau Miami, Florida, also honoured music producers and publishers of the past year’s most-performed R&B/Hip-Hop songs.
Beyond the awards, the night also marked the celebration of the 50th anniversary of Hip-Hop, paying tribute to its legacy and continued influence on music creators and fans across multiple generations.
