NEFTI Calls for Short Film Applications, Offers $5,000 Award Prize

Emerging filmmakers in Africa have been offered a rare opportunity to bring their short film dreams to life. NEFT Emerging Film Talent International is calling for applications for the NEFTI Africa short film competition which would see the winner take home the sum of $5,000 for their creativity.

The annual competition, established by Neft Vodka and the International Emerging Film Talent Association, is aimed at discovering and showcasing underrepresented filmmakers from developing countries who are facing geographical, financial and logistical limitations.

Selected filmmakers are given the opportunity to compete for a spot as one of three finalists to create a short film in 30 days with a $3000 budget. For this year’s competition, 10 contestants will pitch their short film idea via Zoom to the panel of judges, who will select the three finalists, and the winner that will receive the $5,000 grand prize.

Competing films are expected to reflect Neft Vodka’s principles of inclusion, diversity and finding humour in everyday life, and must showcase barrels of Neft Vodka, which must neither be violent nor political. The three finalists are also required to send in vlogs at least once a week documenting their journey.

The competition will be judged by three film-industry veterans including award-winning actress, Vivica Fox, TV producer Bruce Cohen, and President of Feature Post Production at Disney/20th Century Fox, Ted Gagliano, and the winner of the previous year’s competition.

All three films by the finalists will be submitted to international film festivals and screened by IEFTA and NEFT Vodka on a variety of other platforms including the Durban FilmMart.

Interested filmmakers can apply on the NEFTI official website on or before the May 15th deadline.
