Mildred Okwo‘s Neo-Noir Crime Thriller, La Femme Anjola, is now streaming on Apple TV. The film’s North American distribution is made possible by a recent deal that expands its reach beyond its initial release in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Set in the bustling metropolis of Lagos, La Femme Anjola – French for “The Woman Anjola” – is a psychological thriller story of a young investment banker, who falls for a femme fatale married to a wealthy gangster, eventually throwing his life in disarray.
Written by Nigerian-British scriptwriter, Tunde Babalola, and directed by Mildred Okwo, the film stars Rita Dominic, Nonso Bassey, Chris Iheuwa, amongst others, and was first released in March, 2021, premiering on The Audrey Silva Company‘s website, as well as in cinemas. During its theatrical run, the film grossed over 8.1 million Naira in its opening week, securing the second spot at the box office.
However, the producers began exploring other distribution channels after the film was abruptly yanked off cinemas. So far, they have successfully secured deals with a number of top-tier streaming platforms, including Prime Video, Vudu, Google Play, DirecTV and most recently, Apple TV.
The critically acclaimed movie received four nominations from the African Movie Academy Award (AMAA) in 2021 for Best Actor and Actress in Leading Roles, Best Sound, and Best Nigerian Film; and has garnered positive reviews from viewers for its exceptional plot and cinematography.
La Femme Anjola will be available for streaming in parts of Europe in the coming days, says Okwo.
