Wole Talabi, Suyi Davies Okungbowa, and Chinelo Onwualu Shortlisted for the 2024 British Science Fiction Awards

British Science Fiction Awards - Afrocriitik

The year’s BSFA ceremony will be held at the Telford International Centre, Eastercon, Levitation, between March 29 and April 1, 2024.

African writers, Wole Talabi, Suyi Davies Okungbowa, and Chinelo Onwualu, have been shortlisted for the 2024 British Science Fiction Awards. 

Talabi’s works, Shigidi and the Brass Head of Obalufon and Prisoners in the Temple of the Muses were shortlisted in the Best Novel and Best Short Fiction categories. Mothersound: The Sauuutiverse Anthology, edited by Talabi, was also selected in the Best Collection, category.

SHigidi and the Brass Head of Obalufon - BSFA 2024 - Afrocritik

Onwualu’s Ex Marginalia: Essays on Writing Speculative Fiction by Persons of Color was nominated for Best Nonfiction (Long) and Okungbowa’s work Lady Koi Koi: A Book Report was shortlisted for  Best Short Fiction and Exposition Tax: The Hidden Burden of Writing from the Margins for Best Short Nonfiction.

Also, Tanzanian-Australian writer, Eugen Bacon, was shortlisted for her work, Dominant Themes in Afro-Centric Fiction, also in the Best Nonfiction (Short) category.

Other shortlisted authors include Michelle Knuds, Emily Inkpen, Elena Betti, Christine Kim, and many others. The year’s award ceremony will be held at the Telford International Centre, Eastercon, Levitation, between March 29 and April 1, 2024. 

Chinelo Onwualu is a Nigerian editor and a speculative fiction writer. She is currently the co-founder and previous editor-in-chief of Omenana Magazine. Her works have appeared in Slate Magazine, Uncanny Magazine, and Strange Horizons

Suyi Davies Okungbowa is a Nigerian fantasy, science fiction, and speculative writer. His other works include David Mogo, Godhunter, and the fantasy trilogy, The Nameless Republic

The British Science Fiction Awards (BSFA) is a literary award created by the British Science Fiction Association (BSFA) in 1970. The award’s winners are voted by members of the British Science Fiction Association and by the members of Eastercon and BSFA members. Voting will close on the 29th of March.
