Wole Talabi and Chukwuebuka Ibeh Longlisted for the 2024 Wilbur Smith Adventure Writing Prize

The shortlist will be revealed on May 30, 2024.

The jury for the 2024 Wilbur Smith Adventure Writing Prize has announced the longlist for its annual Best Published Novel category. On the longlist that houses 12 authors, Nigerian writers, Wole Talabi and Chukwuebuka Ibeh have been longlisted for their works Shigidi and the Brass Head of Obalufon and Blessings, respectively. They are longlisted alongside authors like Ajay Chowdhury, C.J. Cooke, Craig Shreve, Francesca De Torres, and many others.

The longlisted books will be distributed to a panel of librarians and library staff who will choose the shortlist. They will reveal the shortlist on May 30, 2024. The jury for the shortlist includes Matt Barr, Lee Craigie, Dr Alasdair Harris, Sarah Outen, and Emma Styles. The winner of the prize will be awarded a cash prize of £10,000.

While speaking about the longlist on his X page, Talabi shared his excitement, “Okay, it’s absolutely wild that my novel Shigidi and the Brass Head of Obalufon is on the longlist for the Wilbur Smith adventure writing prize. I never even expected it but I am so happy to see it. Shigidi and Nneoma’s globetrotting, era-spanning adventure was a joy to write”. Ibeh also expressed his excitement about being longlisted on his X page.

The Best Published Novel award is an arm of the Wilbur Smith Adventure Writing Prize which was created to celebrate the best adventure stories of the last year. The award accepts entries by authors of any nationality, writing in English. Other arms of the Wilbur Smith Adventure Writing prize are the Best Unpublished Manuscript and Author of Tomorrow.
