The African Magic Viewers Choice Awards (AMVCA) is an annual celebration of African cinema, recognising and honouring outstanding achievements in the film and television industry. Besides showcasing exceptional talent, the AMVCA 9 red carpet also serves as a platform for African celebrities to exhibit their impeccable fashion sense. The event is a glamour parade, with stars donning stunning designer outfits and pushing fashion boundaries.

From Afrocentric elegance to bold silhouettes, sheer fabrics, impeccable menswear, and statement jewellery, the  AMVCA 9 red carpet showcased the best and most daring fashion choices. The AMVCA serves as a reminder that African fashion is diverse and vibrant and capable of captivating global audiences with its unique flair, and all this is achievable with fashion designers working hard to make all these happen. For what is art without the artist? In this article, we look at the talented designers who left an indelible mark on the AMVCA 9 red carpet, elevating African fashion to new heights.

Tolu Bally

Venita Akpofure

Tolu Bally, a Nigerian designer, and entrepreneur, started her fashion brand 2207 by TBally in 2016. Since then, celebrities like Toyin Abraham, Rita Dominic, Linda Osifo, and many others have elegantly worn her pieces. In the latest AMVCA award show, Tolu Bally made fashion statements with Priscilla Ojo, Tacha Akide, and Venita Akpofure. With these outfits, Bally showcases her skill and reinforces why she is one of the most sought-after designers in Nigeria.

Xtra Brides Lagos

Under the leadership of Oyetomiwa Elizabeth Daniel, fashion brand Xtra Brides has continuously stamped its authority in the fashion industry. This year’s AMVCA award show saw Bimbo Ademoye take our breaths away in a green dress, while Mercy Eke shone brightly in a sparkling blue dress.

For his first outfit for the night, Kunle Remi’s Konye-designed suit shows that suits don’t have to be boring. The suit accentuates Remi’s physique and shows the smooth synergy between art and fashion.

T.I Nathan

Taymesan

The T.I. Nathan Label’s design philosophy revolves around a more contemporary take on Minimalism. With a penchant for philosophy, this budding menswear label has carved a niche in telling personal yet controversial stories with various collections. The brand has dressed notable people like Wizkid, Richard Mofe-Damijo, Tuface Idibia, Patoranking, Ebuka, etc. For their latest red carpet look, Neo Akpofure and Nigerian influencer, Taymesan make bold fashion statements on the AMVCA 9 red carpet. The bold looks worn by the media personalities display class and elegance while slaying in a corset and two-piece.

Jax Grehman

Chidi Mokeme

For the past few years, one of Africa’s leading fashion designers, Jax Grehman, has styled celebrities, including Korede Bello. For their latest clientele list, Grehman styled Chidi Mokeme for his first AMVCA award show after many years.

Deji and Kola

Deji & Kola is a top bespoke men’s outfit fashion company that tailors outfits that drip in excellence and creativity, and this excellence and creativity are seen in their latest muse, Daniel Etim Effiong. On the AMVCA red carpet, Effiong wore a piece from Deji & Kola. For his 2023 look, Effiong made heads turn in a gold and black tuxedo suit.

Mercy Eke

This year, famous fashion house Ceoluminee was not left out of the latest edition of the award show as Mercy Aigbe and BBNaija star, Phyna slayed in some of the pieces from Ceoluminee. While Mercy Aigbe wore a regal look in her purple evening dress, Phyna looked elegant in a white and peach ensemble.

Veekee James

Funke Akindele

Victoria James, popularly known as Veekee James, is one designer who has been remarkable with her designs and work style. The Akwa Ibom-born entrepreneur is known for her illusion and sheer gorgeous dresses, which brides and red carpet personalities mostly wear. Last year, one of her dresses won the best-dressed award at the AMVCA, and now this year, James is the queen of the red carpet with pieces beautifully worn by Osas Ighodaro, and Funke Akindele.

For her 2023 red carpet look, Nigerian actress, Uche Montana chose an outfit from one of the collections designed by Oobiuku. Oobiuku is a fashion brand whose sole purpose is to cater to women in different sizes and skin colours.

Liquorose

The Lagos-based fashion house, SomobySomo, also stormed the AMVCA red carpet with reality TV personality, Roseline Omokhoa Afije, popularly known as Liquorose, walking the red carpet with one of their dresses.

Founded in 2010, April by Kunbi is a brainchild of Nigerian fashion designer, Olakunbi Oyelese, who has built the brand into a one-stop bridal source and a lifestyle brand. For this year’s AMVCA award show, they styled Nigerian OAP and actress, Gbemi Olagbegi-Olateru, in a beautiful white and black dress.

LadyBeellionaire

Another fashion brand that appeared on the AMVCA red carpet is the LadyBeellionaire brand. Headed by the LadyBeellionaire sisters, Chioma, Onyeka, and Ngozi, the fashion brand has styled celebrities like Shaffy Bello, Rita Dominic, and many others. They styled the popular reality TV star, Nengi Hampson, for their latest fashion statement.

Nana Akua Addo

Ghanaian actress, Nana Akua Addo, has always made unique fashion statements on the AMVCA red carpet, and the 2023 edition was no different. Addo wore a Cary Santiago-futuristic-designed silver dress embellished with 3D birds this time. Cary Santiago is a famous Filipino designer who creates shape-defying dresses and has created a name for himself in the fashion world with his couture art dresses.

EmaginebyBukola were included in the glitz and glamour of the AMVCA red carpet as they partnered with the Nollywood actress, Enado Odigie, to bring one of their evening dresses to life.

One of Africa’s foremost couture designers, Lakimmy Fashion, took over the red-carpet event with three actresses rocking their pieces. These actresses include Ini Edo, Juliet Ibrahim, and Linda Osifo. Clad in different dresses, they stood out because of some peculiar details like the spikes on the dresses and the creative use of colour.

One of Nigeria’s biggest action stars, Tobi Bakre, made his red carpet-debut as an actor in a tuxedo designed by Samuel Cray. From suits, blazers, jackets, tuxedos, agbadas, kaftans, and many other clothing options, Samuel Cray has proven himself worthy of being reckoned with for his fashion designs.

The co-host of the AMVCA, Zozibini Tunzi, was not left out of the fashion galore as the beauty queen stood tall in one of Lanre Dasilva’s pieces. The Lanre Dasilva brand first launched in Nigeria in 2005, and since then, the fashion brand has been featured in Vogue, Arise magazine, and many others.

One word to describe the Toju Foyeh brand is elegance. Since its launch in Nigeria, the fashion brand has continuously redefined women’s fashion. For its 2023 AMVCA look, the brand had Nse Ikpe-Etim and Sika Osei looking like the belles of the ball.

One of Nigeria’s most sought-after bridal designers, Yemi Shoyemi, is not only famous for her bridal dresses, but also known for making spectacular evening dresses, and one of her latest designs was worn on the AMVCA red carpet by YouTuber and actress, Bukunmi Adeaga-Ilori, popularly known as Kie Kie. The floral dress easily stands out as one of the best dresses on the red carpet.
