One of Nigeria’s independent publishing companies, Masobe Books, has announced its intentions to publish three new books. The books set for publication include Ore Agbaje-Williams’ The Three of us, Adam Oyebanji’s The Quiet Teacher, and Leila Aboulela’s River Spirit. The Three of us, and River Spirit will be published in June, while The Quiet Teacher will be published in July 2023.
The Three of us is a short, sharp, hilarious, and addictive debut where tensions between a husband, wife, and her best friend bubble – until it all threatens to boil over. While Adam Oyebanji’s fast-paced action thriller, A Quiet Teacher, tells the story of a language teacher with a murky past who races against the clock to solve a murder, Leila Aboulela’s River Spirit is a powerful historical novel that follows the lives of Akuany, Bol, and Yaseen, as they navigate their way through love, freedom, safety, and the fight for Sudan’s independence.
In April 2018, Masobe Books was founded by Nigerian author, Othuke Ominiabohs. The sole aim of the publishing house is to tackle typical challenges faced in Nigerian literature. These challenges include poor distribution and marketing, mediocre production, and readers’ apathy. Since its inception, it has published books like Adaobi Tricia Nwabani’s I Do Not Come to You by Chance, A Broken People’s Playlist by Chimeka Garricks, The Mechanics of Yenagoa by Michael Afenfia, The Madhouse by TJ Benson, and others.
Ore Agbaje-Williams is a British-Nigerian writer and editor, whose works have appeared in publications like gal-dem, Glamour, and Wasafiri. The Three of us is her first novel.
Adam Oyebanji is a writer, lawyer, and counter-terrorist financial guru, who helps banks stop money supply that builds destructive weapons, narcotic empires, and human trafficking networks. His previous works include Braking Day.
Leila Fuad Aboulela is a Sudanese fiction writer, essayist, and playwright. Leila was the first winner of the AKO Caine Prize for African Writing, and her latest story collection, Elsewhere, Home, won the Saltire Fiction Book of the Year Award. Her other works include Lyrics Alley, Minaret, The Kindness of Enemies, and many more.
