African Artists Among 2023 Prince Claus Seed Awards Recipients

Prince Claus 100 Seed Awards - Afrocritik

The recipients were chosen from Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Caribbean, and Eastern Europe, and will receive  €5,000 each.

The organisers of the Prince Claus Seed Awards project have unveiled the 100 recipients of its 2023 edition. 32 of the 100 recipients are from Africa, with awardees across 20 countries. Nigeria, Ghana, and South Africa have the most representation among the African countries that made the list, and are closely followed by Cameroon, Egypt, Ethiopia, Kenya, Senegal, and Zimbabwe.

These recipients from Africa include artists such as TJ Benson, Fawaz Adedeji, Neec Nonso, Suchet Baba, Millz, Victo Peturo, Esther Mwena, Letaru, Arafa C. Hamadi, Mohamed, Adam, Motlhoki, Ibrahim S. Bangura, Magui, Mvfasta, Ismal, Yuck Miranda, PENBOY, and many others.

In an official statement, the fund organisers said, “We are excited to announce the 100 Prince Claus Seed Awards recipients – 100 inspiring artists and cultural practitioners whose work imagines new realities and inspires positive change. In a world that continually evolves, new artists can forge paths to a better, more inclusive, and sustainable future. We are proud to introduce the 100 recipients of the 2023 Prince Claus Seed Awards and celebrate emerging socially engaged artists and cultural practitioners who harness the transformative power of culture to create lasting positive change in their local communities.”

The Prince Claus Seed Awards recognises and supports emerging artists whose work engages with social or political issues within the artist’s community. Since its inception, the initiative has allowed artists to explore new perspectives and collaborate with other artists. 

The recipients were chosen from Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Caribbean, and Eastern Europe, and will receive  €5,000 each.
