8 African Writers Nominated for the 2024 Locus Awards

The Locus Awards winners will be announced on June 22, 2024.

African writers Wole Talabi, Moses Ose Utomi, Uchechukwu Nwaka, Nnedi Okorafor, Oghenechovwe Donald Ekpeki, Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah, Tobi Ogundiran, and Chinelo Onwualu have been announced as some of the writers nominated for the 2024 Locus Award. 

Adjei-Brenyah and Talabi are nominated in the First Novel category for their works Chain-Gang All Stars and Shigidi and the Brass Head of Obafulon, respectively. Utomi’s The Lies of the Ajungo was nominated in the Best Novella category. Nwaka’s The Rainbow Bank clinched a nomination in the Best Novelette category. 

While Okarafor’s short story, Stones bagged a nomination in the Best Short Story category. Ekpeki and Talabi bagged nominations in the Best Anthology category for their works The Year’s Best African Speculative Fiction (2022) and Mothersound: The Sauutiverse Anthology, respectively. Also, Ogundiran’s Jackal, Jackal snagged a nomination in the Best Collection category and Onwualu’s Ex-Marginalia: Essays on Writing Speculative Fiction by Persons of Color was nominated in the Best Non-Fiction category.

Other nominees on the list include Aliette de Bodard, Martha Wells, Shelley Parker-Chan, Stephen Graham Jones, Alechia Dow, and many others. The Locus Awards winners will be announced on June 22, 2024, during the in-person Locus Awards Ceremony in Oakland, California.

The Locus Awards are an annual set of literary awards voted on by readers of the science fiction and fantasy magazine Locus, a monthly magazine based in Oakland, California. In addition to the plaques awarded to the winners, publishers of winning works are also awarded with certificates.
