South African Documentary Film, “The Radical,” Longlisted for One World Media Awards

Finalists will be announced on May 4th ahead of the Awards ceremony slated for June.

The Radical, a feature documentary by the South African filmmaker, Richard Finn Gregory, has been selected for the final longlist for the 2023 One World Media Awards, organised annually to celebrate exceptional media coverage from around the world.

According to a statement from One World Media, more than 600 entries in 15 different categories from 110 countries were received for this year’s edition. “It was tough to choose only ten in each category. But the results are in now and we are honoured to announce the longlist in 15 categories.”

Gregory’s The Radical, a production of Good Works Pictures, chronicles the life of Muhsin Hendricks, a Capetonian former dress-designer believed to be the world’s first openly gay imam, as he chooses between the need to be authentic, and the fear of death. The film is nominated as one of the top 10 finalists for the Best Feature Documentary Award category.

The longlist in each category will be judged by industry experts and leaders from top Media organisations including Al Jazeera, the BBC, CNN, the FT, The Guardian, ITV, Netflix, Sky News, Waterbear, to spotlight stories with unconventional narratives.

Three finalists will be announced on May 4th, and the winners will be presented at the Awards Ceremony in June 2023.
