Ugandan Moses Bwayo and Christopher Sharp’s Bobi Wine: The People’s President and Tunisian filmmaker Kaouther Ben Hania’s Four Daughters have been nominated for the 96th edition of the Academy Awards. Both films were featured in the Best Documentary Feature Film category.
In a statement released by the directors of Bobi Wine, they said, “Making this nomination a timely reminder of the continued fight for democracy, around the world. This film and this nomination have the power to influence the future of Uganda and its 44 million people living under the current regime”.
Also nominated in this year’s Oscars is British-Nigerian photographer and filmmaker, Misan Harriman’s The After, which was selected in the Best Live Action Short Film category. Similarly, Black filmmaker, Cord Jefferson’s American Fiction was nominated in the Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay categories.
Danielle Brooks and Da’Vine Joy Randolph both bagged nominations for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for their roles in The Color Purple and The Holdovers, respectively, while Sterling K. Brown was nominated in the Best Actor in a Supporting Role category for American Fiction.
This year, the award ceremony will be held on March 10, 2024, at the Dolby Theatre, Los Angeles.
Other nominated actors include Bradley Cooper, Emma Stone, Cillian Murphy, Paul Giamatti, Lily Gladstone, Jeffrey Wright, Carey Mulligan, Ryan Gosling, Mark Ruffalo, America Ferrera, Jodie Foster, and many others. Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, Yorgos Lantimos’ Poor Things, Martins Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, and Bradley Cooper’s Maestro, lead the nominations list. The Oscar Academy Awards will be hosted by Jimmy Kimmel.
