African artistes, Tyla, Ayra Starr, Burna Boy, Tems, Pheelz, Davido, and Lojay have been announced as nominees for the ‘Best Afrobeats Song’ at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards.
The Afrobeats category, which was inaugurated last year, saw Rema’s “Calm Down” featuring Selena Gomez, become the first-ever winner of the category. This year Burna Boy’s “City Boys”, Tyla’s “Water”, Ayra Starr’s “Last Heartbreak Song” featuring Giveon, and Tems’ “Love Me Jeje”, are vying for the Best Afrobeats Song award. Pheelz, Davido, and Lojay bagged nominations in the Afrobeats category as a result of their contributions on Usher’s “Ruin” and Chris Brown’s “Sensational”, respectively.
In addition, Tyla is also nominated in the ‘Best New Artiste’ and ‘Best R&B’ categories making her the most nominated African artiste at this year’s VMAs. With 10 nominations, American artiste, Taylor Swift leads the nominations list. She is closely followed by Post Malone, Sabrina Carpenter, Eminem, and Ariana Grande. Other nominated artistes include Victoria Monet, Muni Long, Shaboozey, Chappell Roan, Beyonce, Alicia Keys, and many others.
Now in its 40th year, the MTV Video Music Awards, popularly abbreviated as the VMAs, is an award show presented by the American cable channel, MTV, to honour the best music videos. Popularly called the Grammy Awards for music videos, the award show has continued to recognise quality music videos and artistes. While this year’s event host is yet to be announced, the award show will be held on September 10, 2024, in New York.
