Three recent winners of the Safal-Cornell Kiswahili Prize will be speaking on a literary panel hosted by Cornell’s Institute for African Development on December 2nd, 2022. This marks Cornell’s first formal collaboration with the prize.
The three winners who will be speaking include novelist, Anna Manyanza, poet Jacob Ngumbau, and short story writer, Lello Mmassy. The panel will also include prize co-founder, Prof. Mũkoma Wa Ngũgĩ, and Prof. N’Dri Assié Lumumba.
This panel follows the Undergraduate Studies and International Foreign Language grant offered the Institute for African Development in 2019 by the US Department of Education to foster the learning and preservation of African languages, specifically Kiswahili, Twi and Tumbuka languages.
The three winners, according to the event schedule, will be discussing “poetry, travel and Kiswahili intergenerational transcendence.”
The Safal-Cornell Kiswahili Prize with its $15,000 cash prize, aims to promote “the goal of recognizing African languages and encouraging translation from, between and into African languages.”
