Five African writers have been announced as finalists for the inaugural edition of the Museum of African Diaspora African Literary Awards.
The five finalists are: Sulaiman Addonia (Silence Is My Mother Tongue), Wayétu Moore (The Dragons, The Giant, The Women), Sisonke Msimang (Always Another Country: A Memoir of Exile and Home), Rémy Ngamije (The Eternal Audience of One), and Mũkoma Wa Ngũgĩ (Unbury Our Dead With Song).
The award is given “in recognition of an author who has produced a work of literary excellence and taken a leadership role in promoting writing and literacy in their local community.”
The judging panel of the prize includes Faith Adiele, Elizabeth Gessel, and Nia McAllister. The panel selected the works, “…taking into consideration the strength of the writing and its ability to highlight new stories, the scope and longevity of the authors’ community literary initiatives, and the potential impact of the award on said communities.”
