The five winners of the 2022 Morland Writing Scholarship were revealed last week.

The Morland Writing Scholarships for African Writers is a grant that allows writers to complete an active manuscript in a one-year period. Fiction writers receive a cash sum of £18,000 spread across one year, while nonfiction writers get the sum of £27,000 spread across eighteen months.

This year’s prize is judged by Muthoni Garland as chair, with Bibi Bakare-Yusuf and Chuma Nwokolo. The judges had released its shortlist in October, drawn from a pool of over 500 entries from published authors.

Muhammad L. Kejera (Gambia)

Neema Komba (Tanzania)

Garland noted on the awards that, “These are brave and thoughtful writers tackling difficult stories that deserve to be heard. Yes, we do have one new Scholar who, I hope, will use black humour to illustrate a complicated subject but, as in previous years, it is the dangerous and difficult stories that our new Scholars will be telling. I know those stories will make compelling reading.”
